Sippican School memorial garden sees new plants

MARION — The memorial garden in front of Sippican School was given fresh plantings to start the spring on Saturday, April 15.

The garden honors the memory of four students who died while enrolled at the school: Cory Jackson, Alexis Wisner, Andrew Rego and Marques Sylvia.

On Tuesday, Jan. 31, a 100-year-old Norway Spruce tree that formed the centerpiece of the garden was cut down. Now, new plants and new care was put into garden by members of Marion’s Pythagorean Lodge AF & AM.

According to Sippican School music teacher Hannah Moore, both Tree Committee member Margie Baldwin and landscaper Steve Gonzalves were “instrumental” in establishing the original garden and in the recent plantings.

It is a “pretty special effort all around,” said Moore.
