Bulldog baseball: ‘It’s what we do’
MATTAPOISETT — On Friday, April 28, the bases were loaded and the Bulldogs were up at bat against the Swansea Case Cardinals.
The tension didn’t last long as solid hits from Old Rochester batters led the Bulldogs to score several runs — eventually going on to knock Case out of their early-game lead and win 5-4.
This brought the Bulldogs up to five wins, and fourth place, in the South Coast Conference.
“We got behind a little early, we tied it up, got behind again — and we’ve been able to come back this week,” said Old Rochester Regional High School varsity baseball coach Steve Carvalho.
The Bulldogs’ win against Case is the team’s third South Coast Conference win in a row after a devastating 11-0 loss against first-place Somerset Berkley Regional High School.
But in Friday's game, the players gave it their all, said Carvalho.
“I'm proud of the kids [for] getting guys on base, they played under pressure all week and they've been coming through,” he said.
Even though the team has a “very tough schedule coming up” with games against Bourne, Dighton-Rehoboth and Greater New Bedford Vocational, Carvalho feels “good about going forward,” and so does the team.
“We're on a roll,” said Old Rochester Player Alec Marsden. “I’m pretty happy with how we did. We have a tough next week but we have three [wins this week] and we’re going to see it through.”
According to Carvalho, the team has been working on the fundamentals of the sport — “pitchers throwing strikes [and] a solid defense.”
During the early season’s games the team put those skills on display.
“Our pitchers are, for the most part, throwing strikes, and we're getting pretty good at bats,” said Carvalho, who pointed out that there have been “a lot of contributions across the board.”
But even then, “kids are gonna make mistakes — the Red Sox make mistakes.”
Carvalho noted, “there’s a lot of life in baseball … We talk a lot about hustling and being on time and being good teammates.”
“We breathe and love the game,” said Old Rochester player Gage Beauchemin. “Old Rochester. Bulldogs. Baseball. That’s what we do … we win.”
