Mattapoisett seeks scholarship committee volunteers
MATTAPOISETT— Mattapoisett residents have a new opportunity to get involved with the community. The Mattapoisett Select Board announced that the town is searching for volunteers to join the Mattapoisett Scholarship Committee.
According to Town Administrator Mike Lorenco, Massachusetts law states that in order for the town to grant scholarship funds to students, there must be a scholarship committee.
“The quicker we can fill [the committee] the quicker we can give out some scholarship money,” said Lorenco.
According to Lorenco, there are two students who have applied for scholarships through the town this academic year.
The two scholarship applicants were addressed during a May 23 Select Board meeting. At the time, the Select Board was unable to act because the scholarship committee had not been established.
Lorenco said that the vacancies on the committee are due to a lack of interest from previous committee members.
According to Lorenco, scholarship committee volunteers would be responsible for disbursing money donated to the scholarship fund by residents. He said that the committee should consist of “no fewer than four” volunteers.
Those interested in applying for a seat on the Mattapoisett Scholarship Committee should contact Mattapoisett Town Hall at 508-758-4100.
