Opinion: Tall grass in Marion

Aug 7, 2023

To the editor:

I live on Mill Street, and a pesky patch of tall grass blocks driver’s views where Mill Street intersects with Wareham Street (Route 6) as well as blocking the views of westbound drivers on Wareham Street approaching Mill Street. The property, according to assessors Map 13, Parcel 48A, belongs to the Wells Gas Station, 439 Wareham Street, and is owned by Mr. Ossama Mohamed.

This section of Mill Street is one-way and many drivers exiting the Marion Community Center-Council on Aging, and the Marconi Village senior housing community drive low-profile vehicles making the tall grass a challenging obstacle. Employees of various businesses on Atlantis Drive and Marconi Lane, for instance, Marion Antiques, Sperry Sails, Lars V. Olsen Fine Home Building, Inc., and Sippican Healthcare access Mill Street as a connector to Wareham Street.

Beginning July 27, 2023, I notified Mr. Mohamed about the tall grass expressing my concerns for the health, safety, and welfare of drivers. Mr. Mohamed assured me that “someone would clear the grass shortly.”

The fact that the tall grass remains uncut is a stark reminder of the continuing danger posed to drivers attempting to enter Wareham Street from Mill Street. Again, I am asking Mr. Mohamed to please cut down the tall grass for driver and community safety.

Sincerely,

Eileen J. Marum, Marion
