Six events coming to Marion Art Center for ArtWeek SouthCoast

Apr 29, 2024

MARION — ArtWeek SouthCoast returns to the Marion Art Center with six events during the regional festival scheduled May 9 to 19.

ArtWeek SouthCoast is a 10-day event celebrating the arts with offerings in communities from Fall River to Wareham.

The Marion Art Center will kick off the festival with the MAC Theater Playwrights Incubator 2023-2024 performance of “All The Frozen Ones” by this years’ playwright Stella Ferra. Tickets are $8 for performances on May 9, 10, 11 at 7:30 p.m at the Marion Art Center theater.

On May 11, bring a bike to the Marion Art Center from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for “Hands on: Spin Into Spring! Community Bike Tune-up.” An expert will be on hand to provide certain repairs or advice for bicycles. The event is free but requires registration.

Also on May 11, Annawon Weeden — an activist, storyteller, dancer, and tribal mentor of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe — will perform “Annawon Weedon: Historical Journey of Mashpee Wampanoag” from 1 to 2:30 p.m at the First Congregational Church Community Center in Marion. A donation of $5 is suggested for the interactive solo performance, or pay what you can.

Join instructor Lidia Mikhaylova from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 15 for “Experience: Silk Painting Masterclass: The Magic of Colors & Flowers.” The easy and relaxing silk painting workshop is $35 per person, includes all materials and will be held in the Marion Art Center studio.

On May 18, watch a chainsaw tree carving demo led by Evan Verissimo of Kind Tree Carving from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The demonstration — in which Verissimo will transform a piece of wood into a work of art — will take place on the Marion Art Center lawn and is $5 per person. The chainsaw carving demonstration’s rain date is May 19.

Also on May 18, attend a paint and sip workshop with artist Barbara Healy from 1 to 3 p.m. on the Marion Art Center lawn. At the workshop, participants will be guided through the process of painting a sailboat scene while sipping wine. All materials will be provided. Attendees must be 21 or older to register and should wear clothes that can be painted in. In case of rain, the workshop
will relocate to the Marion Art Center studio. The class is $35 per person.
