MATTAPOISETT — Visit the Mattapoisett Free Public Library during September to view an exhibit of oils on panels.

From Sept. 3 to 29, “Paintings from Back Roads – Wild and Imagined Places” by South Dartmouth artist JP Powell will be on display at the library.

Powell said his work is “imaginative realism” in which the images created “have people seeing the world differently, more radiant,” according to a release from the library.

“By using distorted perspective and selective fine detail and using observation mixed with visionary experience executed with passion and bemusement, the viewer sees miracle and enigma in the mundane,” the release said.

New Bedford-born and Harvard educated, Powell spent most of his time painting and drawing time at a marsh and lake in Maine, according to the release.

Powell previously joined the Peace Corps and painted for 10 years before building Salt Marsh Pottery with his wife before returning to painting. He has participated in the South Coast Artist Studio Tours, among other shows and galleries. His work has appeared in a number of publications, according to the release.

Powell has a studio open and a website at yellowboatstudio.com.
