With new plaque, Rochester town pound is ‘concrete reminder’ of past

ROCHESTER — A plaque was recently placed at the “Town Pound” on Snipatuit Road in Rochester by Rochester Historical Commission member George Owen.

The commission began the historic plaque program as a way to enhance knowledge of the town’s history, according to commission member Connie Eshbach.

The 1744 pound “is a concrete reminder of Rochester’s past,” Eshbach said.

“The pound was not for household pets but for stray farm animals and problem animals of all sizes,” according to Eshbach. “While there were once many stone pounds of this type, most are gone.”
