Marion awarded $150K for harbor management plan
MARION — A $150,000 infusion of state funding will enable Marion to create a management plan for the town’s harbor.
With the grant funds, announced Dec. 10 by Gov. Maura Healey’s administration, Marion will hire a consultant to assist in designing a plan that will address matters like infrastructure improvements, environmental protections and public access at the harbor.
The award from the state will allow Marion to create “a working document that will provide the town information on the best management practices for the harbor,” Harbormaster Adam Murphy said.
The plan will in part look into how to best utilize public access at the harbor and highlight possible upgrades to the site’s infrastructure.
“It's all to build in the resiliency around the harbor to make sure that the infrastructure is at its healthiest, and the people, the patrons using it, are at the safest, and we're providing the most professional service that we possibly could,” Murphy said.
Other issues expected to be addressed by the management plan include economic development and emergency preparedness at the harbor.
The grant comes months after Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll and other officials visited the harbor to view the construction of the town’s new maritime center, into which the state funded $1.6 million.
The new building, not yet opened to the public, has “really highlighted the waterfront community” in Marion, Murphy said.
The $150,000 grant awarded by the state “is a significant investment in the future of Marion's harbor,” Murphy said in a news release.
Local stakeholders, like residents, harbor users and local business owners will be engaged for input, and experts like marine engineers and environmental scientists will also help to develop the plan, according to the release.
The document will give the town “a broader scope” of the harbor, according to Murphy.
“It's seeing the harbor through different sets of eyes,” he said.
The consultant that will assist in developing the management plan has not yet been determined, nor has a timeline for the project yet been set, according to Murphy.
