With Slideshow: Barbie Garden pays tribute and pokes fun at iconic doll
In Teresa Dall’s unusual garden, Barbie dolls frolic with two-headed dragons, a miniature Shakespeare goes for a ride with Marge Simpson and G.I. Joes are the ones carrying the handbags and hairbrushes.
From Memorial Day to Halloween, Dall and husband Mark’s front yard, on the corner of North Street and Church Street, is the scene of the Barbie Garden, a collection of hundreds of figurines, rubber bugs and toy cars.
“It’s kind of a spoof on Barbies, that they’re oblivious to danger,” said Dall. “They’re all waving despite dinosaurs over their shoulders and things trying to crawl into their cars.”
The idea for the garden came from a trip to Provincetown.
“In front of one of the guesthouses there was a display of Barbies and super heroes and all sorts of things,” said Dall. “It fascinated me.”
When she got back to Mattapoisett, Dall said she talked about the garden so much that her friends started buying Barbies for her at yard sales. The blond dolls eventually became her default birthday and Christmas presents.
Once she got a modest amount, Dall said, “I guess I have to do this.”
“It was relatively small at first and has grown, just like a garden, every year.”
Now 13 years later, Dall’s garden has become a local phenomenon.
“Kids start asking for it in April. Some little ones come twice a day,” said Dall. “The adults come, too. On weekends whole cars full of people stop and get out. It’s really pretty funny.”
The garden was even featured in a book of quirky places in the state called “Weird Massachusetts.”
But, Dall hasn’t let all the attention go to her head. The recently retired Old Rochester Regional teacher said she doesn’t plan out the garden each year, but she does pay attention to details when she arranges everything.
“A lot of the dinosaurs have hangers hanging out of their mouths. There is a G.I. Joe who is standing at a sink washing a cat. The way I arrange them amuses me. I get a kick out of it,” she said.
There is one specific message in Dall’s garden: The Ken dolls are not to be tolerated.
“The Kens are all by themselves in the gazebo. The Barbies don’t like the Kens, so they’re pretty much isolated.”
Fortunately, Dall doesn’t liken her husband to the pretty boys in the pavilion. In fact, he’s the garden’s biggest fan.
“My husband loves telling people about them,” she said. While Dall hunts out dinosaurs, snakes and bugs for the garden, it’s her husband who buys the Barbies.
“There is never a lack of Barbies. He has backups. He’s wonderful that way. He’s got extra clothes, and he must have hundreds of Barbie shoes,” said Dall.
Come Halloween, he’s also the one who prepares the Barbies for their winter storage.
“He’s good at cleaning them because at the end of the season, they’re pretty grungy. He washes them all and cleans their hair and packs them away for next time.”
After over a decade, Dall admits that the garden was always meant to be tongue-in-cheek.
“Growing up, Barbies were never my thing,” said Dall. “It was more that I wanted to make fun of Barbies, but it’s turned out to be a nice tribute to them as well.”
