Museum introduces Mattapoisett’s present to the past

MATTAPOISETT — Summer campers in the Recreation Department’s Seahorse Explorer summer camp learned all about what makes Mattapoisett special in a recent field trip to the Mattapoisett Museum.

Curator and Administrator of the museum Connor E. Gaudet introduced the kids, who ranged from four-years-old to 12, to some vocabulary used to describe artifacts.

Kids ages 4 through 7 walked through the village to learn stories about the town’s history from Carole Clifford and Lee Heald and also participated in a scavenger hunt around the Museum as volunteers explained the meaning and significance behind certain displays and artifacts.

Kids ages 8 through 12 played a seek and find activity with pictures of artifacts on their papers. When they found an item in the museum matching the picture on their paper, they received a sticker.

All campers met back up with Gaudet at the end of the day to share what their favorite artifacts in the museum were, with the 1940s phone, the model of the saltworks and its pans and a diorama of the Wampanoag village were among the kids’ favorite displays.

Campers and volunteers both left the museum with a better idea of what makes Mattapoisett so special.
