Marion school officials begin 2014 budget planning

Possible cuts to the state's financial aid to towns has local school officials crunching numbers early for 2014 school budgets.

Members of the Marion School Committee’s budget sub-committee are planning next year's budget for Sippican School, which will require a 2.5 percent increase from the previous year due to staff contractual obligations, said Superintendent Doug White.

On Wednesday, White met with the School Committee to discuss unknown factors that could prove problematic to the budget, such as state aid cuts.

To make up for a $540 million shortfall in the state's budget, Governor Deval Patrick cut state spending by $225 million earlier in December. An additional $9 million may also be cut, which will affect the schools, White said.

“We’re looking at the resources. We’re looking at what the budget would look like if we had to reduce it,” White said.

Marion's state aid figures are expected to be released by the governor later this month.

“It’s a long process and it will take several months to come to final numbers,” White said.

The sub-committee will present a draft of the 2014 budget at the next School Committee meeting in February. To go into effect, the budget would have to be approved by May Town Meeting.
