MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Free Public Library is presenting as part of its artist series  "Scanography," a photography exhibit by Donna St Amant, from Dec. 1 to 31.

St Amant’s exhibit is “astonishing,” and “using a very unique process,” she “captures nature’s treasures on a flat bed scanner,” a Mattapoisett Library news release said.

St Amant’s love for capturing images began in the early 1980s with black and white film and her own darkroom, according to the release.

In retirement, St Amant “rekindled her love of photography,” the release said.

“St Amant captures the close-up detail and beauty of flowers, worn beached objects, and elements of nature on a high-resolution flat bed scanner in a process often called ‘Scanography,’ the release said. “Once used to digitize her photographic negatives, the scanner is now her ‘studio camera’ and the fine detail it captures never ceases to amaze her.”

The process — of placing objects directly on the scanner glass with the cover left open to build depth and layers from foreground to background — feels like “organizing a group portrait” to St Amant, according to the release.

“It’s all about passion, the joy of creating…and the continuous quest to learn and grow,” St Amant said in the release.
