‘It’s a Wonderful’ radio show

Nov 29, 2012

The Marion Art Center Players are putting a community theater spin on a holiday classic.

This weekend, the actors will perform Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” as a live radio show.

Set in the 1940s, the story follows George Bailey, who is down and out after sacrificing his own dreams for the needs of other people. Ready to give up, George’s guardian angel Clarence Odbody gives him a new perspective on how his life has impacted others.

For Deborah Bokelkamp, director of the Art Center, choosing to perform this particular show so close to Christmas was no coincidence.

“We knew we wanted to do a holiday show and this is a classic,” Bokelkamp said. “It’s a beloved story and it reminds us that we do matter. This is about giving and how George is always stepping up to the plate.”

Directed by Wareham resident Rex McGraw, the Art Center’s production will be performed as a live radio show.

For the sound effects, the actors use gavels to emulate the sound of a closing door, marble-filled jars for the sound of breaking windows, and a recording of a ringing telephone for, well, the sound of a ringing telephone.

“A radio show is a great option for a small community theater. It’s a great way to entertain,” Bokelkamp said.

As for the actors, Bokelkamp said the show is welcoming a few new faces to the cast as well as bringing back some seasoned veterans.

“We have a great group of actors who are very hands-on,” Bokelkamp said. “They all contributed to the set design, they helped build the set, and they did their own costumes. It’s all in the spirit of true community theater. They are so involved in the whole process. I love to see that.”

The Marion Art Center Players will perform “It’s a Wonderful Life” on at 8 p.m. on November 30, December 1, 7, and 8. There will also be a matinee show at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 9. Tickets are $12.50 for Art Center members and $15 for non-members.
