‘One Small Voice’: Kindergarteners sing their way into first grade
ROCHESTER — Addition, reading and writing sentences were some of the skills touted by kindergarten students at Rochester Memorial School on Friday, June 9 as they were promoted to first grade.
To celebrate the transition to first grade, the students sang songs and danced under the direction of Rochester Memorial School kindergarten teachers Melissa Weigel and Katie St. Yves.
In the four songs performed, students sang about kindness, diversity and individuality.
“When we work together it's such a sight to see, the world is beautiful when we live in harmony,” the students sang from the song “The World is a Rainbow.”
The future first-graders were met with cheers and applause from the audience.
Along with their performance, students displayed self-portraits on the wall of the school's cafeteria.
Teachers encouraged parents to identify their student’s drawings by using hints written on each piece like favorite foods and activities.
“We are so proud of them, [and] we are sad to see them go to first grade,” said Weigel. “They’re going to do great.”
