MARION — There was a “Melodious Noise” at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Marion on Saturday, July 29 as the venue hosted the first night of the Music from Land’s End chamber music concert series.

Directed by Ariadne Daskalakis, a group of internationally recognized musicians gathered to open the 11th season of the series.

The group who played on Saturday, had gotten to know each other at a music festival in Maine before coming together in Marion, said Daskalakis.

Playing at the show was soprano Sherezade Panthaki, flutist Emi Ferguson, violinists Jesse Irons and Daskalakis, violist and composer Sebastian Gottschick, cellist Beiliang Zhu and harpsichord player Arthur Haas.

“We were so lucky to get the players — we just love them, musically and as people,” she said.

Choosing the songs that are included in the program is “kind of like a puzzle,” said Daskalakis. “We start with one or two key pieces — there’s either a specific colleague we want to work with or a piece that we’re dying to do, and then we build it around that.”

Daskalakis explained that the piece “Melodious Noise,” written for the group by Gottschick, was the “central piece of the puzzle” for this performance.

However, an unforeseen issue changed the program and only one section of the piece was sung by Panthaki.

Last minute changes can be “a challenge” said Daskalakis, who added that there is still so much music to choose from. “We’re lucky to have these colleagues [who are] so flexible … we knew it was going to be ok.”

Daskalakis hopes that concert series like Music from Land’s End can serve as an entry point for people who don’t normally listen to classical music.

“We really try to program it so that anybody can enjoy it,” she said. “Usually we have a good sense of what is [accessible].”
