1913 water tower coming down in Mattapoisett

Jul 17, 2012

Mattapoisett’s North Street water tower is coming down, said Water and Sewer Commissioner Nick Nicholson.

Over the next two weeks, it will be phased out and drained before contractors begin to dismantle and remove it. Nicholson said that could happen as early as August 20 and be completed by September 10.

Built in 1913, the tower sits in a residential area and currently serves to build pressure for the water system and to store water when for times of high demand.

“I really wanted to do something with it earlier than this, but it didn’t work out,” Nicholson said.

Setbacks from a new tank built on Industrial Drive have prevented the removal of the North Street structure.

The Industrial Drive tower went into use in August 2011.

“It was online for a number of months and we realized that there were problems with the painting on the outside,” said Nicholson.

With sheets of paint peeling from the structure, the original contractors were brought in to remove the faulty paint and start over again.

With the new tower again in working order, Nicholson said it was time to take down the old one.

“It’s lived a good life,” he said.

Once gone, the lot will be landscaped. Nicholson said the town has no plans to use the lot.
