Anonymous donor gifts $25,000 to Sippican School

Feb 4, 2016

Sippican School is again the recipient of a generous gift from an unknown donor.

For the fourth consecutive year, Marion School Committee members voted to accept $25,000 with the caveat it be used for the benefit of students, not for issues such as budget shortfalls.

Principal Lyn Rivet told committee members that last year’s donation went towards the purchase of 200 new Chromebook laptops. Previous donations were spent on a variety of things including iPads, field trips and equipment for the nurse’s office.

“The money is used to help children,” Rivet said. “I really work hard to live up to the intent that it was given.”

The committee voted 4-1 to accept the donation with member Christine Winters expressing reservations about the anonymous aspect of the gift. In 2014, Winters voted against the donation saying there should be parameters set on how the money is spent.

“I think there are other ways to facilitate this to make it work if the donor is known,” she said. “I’m not saying we shouldn’t accept, I’m saying I have concerns with the process in which it’s done.”

Chair Christine Marcolini disagreed.

After speaking with a member of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, Marcolini said she found no issues with accepting the donation as is.

“Whether it’s an anonymous donation or not is not important,” Marcolini said.

Winters said she also spoke with someone from the association recently and received a “different perspective.”

Member Kate Houdellette expressed gratitude for the donation and called for an end to the discussion.

“I think we should be celebrating this instead of continuing to debate this,” she said.

Rivet, who is responsible for spending the funds, said she was investigating how to best use the donation.

“I look forward to hearing how this next phase of the donation will be used to benefit our kids,” Marcolini said.
