AP program on the rise at ORR

Oct 15, 2015

Since 2011, the number of students taking Advanced Placement courses at Old Rochester Regional High School has increased from 79 to 131.

“We’ve done a great job of expanding our AP program,” Principal Mike Devoll said at the ORR School Committee meeting on Wednesday night. “We’re predicting that number to go up even further next year.”

Devoll said the school has increased its offerings for the college-level courses, including AP Psychology this year. Fifteen students, enough for a single section, were expected to sign up, but the school ended up with 75 students and three sections.

“Many are first time AP students,” said Devoll.

As budget allows, he said more science and art courses will be offered.

“The opportunities are there, our kids are definitely taking advantage of them.”

Devoll also said all of the students will take the national AP exam for their courses at the end of the year, per a vote last year by the School Committee.
