Appointments and resignations at Selectmen's meeting

Sep 14, 2011

Tuesday's Mattapoisett Board of Selectmen meeting saw plenty of changes as resignations, appointments and citations all made an appearance.

Vanessa Williams, the Director of the Mattapoisett Council on Aging, was presented with an award thanking her for her four years of service to the town's seniors.

"It's been an honor to work for the Town of Mattapoisett," Williams said. "Especially the seniors."

As Williams moves on so too will John DeMello, the town's Sealer of Weights and Measures. The Selectmen were unable to recall exactly how long DeMello had worked for the town because it had been so long. He will be presented with a citation for his more than 20 years of service to the town.

Taking on new responsibilities are Sgt. Robert Dumas, Sgt. Jason King and Ptl. Scott LeBlanc of the Mattapoisett Police Department. The three officers were voted to become part of Police Harbor Patrol that will assist Harbormaster Horace Field III with enforcement of waterway violations.

"They're very familiar with the waterways," said Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons. "I think the ability to have some enforcement as well is valuable to the community."

Lyons said that the police had been experimenting with patrolling the harbors by being present at the Wednesday night regattas during the summer.

"It's been well received," said Selectman Jordan Collyer. "I've spoken to some of the officers involved and they've said its working really well."

The Selectmen also appointed Nicholas Lorenco as a Reserve Police Officer.

The Police Department isn't the only town office seeing new members. The Mattapoisett Cultural Council will be welcoming Gary Hoyt, Dr. Elliot Thrasher, Gail Kaloplastos, Kathleen Reed and Matt Camara, all of whom were appointed.

In other business the Selectmen:

Received  an update on the response to Tropical Storm Irene from Lyons and Mattapoisett Highway Surveyor Barry Denham.

Discussed potential Town Meeting dates for early November with Town Administrator Mike Gagne, who is hoping to set a date of November 7.

Gagne also said he is evaluating the possibility of a small senior housing complex in Mattapoisett, adding that many seniors are forced to move to New Bedford in retirement due to the cost of living.

"A life-long resident of Mattapoisett should be able to stay here with their friends," Gagne said.

The board also announced that the town is still seeking to fill two vacancies on the Marine Advisory Board.
