Arctic whaler’s story to be recounted at Mattapoisett Museum

MATTAPOISETT — The Mattapoisett Museum, 5 Church St., will host a talk via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16 with Helen Frink, author of “Oil, Ice & Bone: Arctic Whaler Nathaniel Ransom.’’

The book relates the tale of Ransom, a 14-year-old in 1860 who hunted 70-ton bowhead whales in the Arctic waters for 15 years. In 1871, he survived the loss of 32 whaling vessels.

Open Mic Night will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 18. Participants can play an instrument, read a poem, tell a story or otherwise share their talents. 

An old-time fiddle session will be held by Southcoast Lessons at 1 p.m. Feb. 27. Participants are welcome to bring an instrument if they play, or simply relax and listen to the music.
