Art meets architecture at Marion exposition
For visitors and artisans of the premiere Southeastern Massachusetts Artisan Exposition, the two-day event brought art and architecture together in imaginative ways.
Anthi Frangiadis Associates selected professional artisans from Massachusetts and Rhode Island to participate in the show, held on the grounds of Sippican School June 29 and 30.
Matthew Sperry, who runs Sperry Fabric Architecture in Rochester, praised Anthi Frangiadis for the creative and inclusive show.
“[Frangiadis] has incorporated a lot of people’s work in her own. For her to design a house and then talk to the customer about putting local work within that, it’s such a great local thing to do. Comes right around to what she’s doing with this expo – she’s involving everybody,” Sperry said. “I was excited to be a part of it.”
Sperry rented space at the exposition and a tent from his company housed the show.
In its first year, more than 30 artisans participated according to Frangiadis.
“We’re very pleased with the turnout,” she said, adding that despite some rain: “We were dry and happy under the tent.”
Architectural applications for interior and exterior use were displayed, including works of clay, glass, stone, wood, metal, fiber, plants, and any combination of those materials.
One artisan, Matthew Mann, represented two businesses at the show. Seven years ago, he started Mann Mosaic after leaving a career in home restoration.
“It’s led to a rich and adventurous life,” he said. Mann’s mosaics are custom-designed. Colorful and detailed, the mosaics transform a space through Mann’s tile work. In one project, blue tiles are arranged on a shower wall so it appears as though a waterfall is cascading toward the floor. Another project took a former fireplace and turned it into a seascape.
Recently, Mann and a friend launched the Mosaic Shingle Company, which specializes in pre-cut multi-layer shingle pattern designed for homes, sheds, and barns.
Do-it-yourself kits are available in custom and stock designs. The kits allow homeowners to add flair to their house at a reasonable price, Mann said.
“Everybody deserves a touch of artwork on their home,” he said.
Mann noted the company also installs custom designed shingles for homes and businesses.

Keith and Margaret Boling sold hand-woven baskets at the show. Together, husband and wife operate Mar-Ke Baskets out of East Freetown. For more than 20 years, the couple has sold free-weave, Nantucket-style and gourd baskets.
“She runs the business and I do all the weaving,” Mr. Boling said as he wove a new basket while his wife attended to customers.
“We love to incorporate the work of other crafters,” Mrs. Boling said and pointed to a custom cutting board, carved to look like a fish, that had design elements from her husband’s weaving on top.
The baskets are natural. No glue is used and Mr. Boling colors the reeds used in the baskets by hand. Another basket had Florida pine needles weaved into the basket giving it a rustic feel.
“[Mr. Boling] loves to include the natural world in his work,” Mrs. Boling said.

Frangiadis noted artisans exhibit their work in the Drawing Room at Anthi Frangiadis Associates, located at 11 Spring St., Marion, throughout the year. A design showroom, it features original handcrafted pieces made by New England artisans
