Artist's aerials reveal unique view of the coast
Paper and paint flow together naturally in Remmi Franklin's artwork.
The Milton-based artist's recent work centers on aerials, mostly depicting shorelines from Cape Cod to San Francisco. These pieces are now on display at a solo exhibit in the Marion Art Center that opened Feb. 13.
Franklin started with Boston and someone asked if she could do Marion. The theme continued from there, with each mixed media piece an exploration of a different stretch of coast.
Milton has long been an artist, originally focusing on painting. When her daughter, a RISD student who often worked with paper, passed away, she began to incorporate that medium into her work.
“That's what evolved me into paper,” said Milton.
In addition to paper, Milton also enjoys creating abstract pieces, but her current work offers a fairly literal, recognizable and colorful bird's eye view of the landscape.
Many of the pieces are focused on the northeaster coast, including Cape Cod, Buzzards Bay and Long Island. Milton has also mapped out Fenway Park. Franklin usually focuses on places she's visited, but has created images of New Orleans and Alaska sight unseen.
“I saw it as a challenge,” Milton said.
In addition to the aerials, she also has pieces from her space collection on display at the Marion Art Center.
The exhibit will continue through March 11 and is open to the public during regular hours: Tuesday-Friday, 1-5 p.m. and Saturday, 10-2 p.m. For more information, visit marionartcenter.org.
