Assistant harbormaster arrested on charges of domestic abuse
Milton Heuberger of 7 Fairview Drive was arrested on his boat Friday following charges of domestic assault and battery.
Heuberger, 72, is one of two assistant harbormasters in Mattapoisett. He was arraigned at Wareham District Court on Monday and released on personal recognizance. His case has been continued to Aug. 13.
Heuberger’s wife contacted police on Thursday, July 17 stating that her husband had verbally and physically abused her, according to a police report on file at Wareham District Court. She also said Heuberger had a license to carry a firearm and owns guns.
According to the police statement, Heuberger’s wife told an officer that her husband “has been drinking all night and is intoxicated.”
She said they had a verbal argument at their house and Heuberger left. Shortly thereafter, she drove to his boat where the arguing continued. She told police that the argument turned physical and her husband “pinned her down and began choking her with his hands around her neck.”
The suspect’s wife was able to free herself and get off the boat.
Heuberger’s wife received a restraining order, and police began a search for him at his home and boat.
When they did not find him, a warrant for his arrest was issued and police eventually found him at his boat on Friday and arrested him.
Harbormaster Jill Simmons said Heuberger is a part-time employee and has been placed on administrative leave.
