Athletic Hall of Fame reunion welcomes back ORR greats
And the memories just come flooding back.
Former Old Rochester Regional athletes gathered on Saturday night for the ORR Hall of Fame reunion in Mattapoisett. For most, the event was a chance to catch up with old friends and share tales of Bulldog pride.
Many who attended the reunion had played on the 1965 ORR High School football team, which was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year.
“The ’65 football team was the first undefeated team for the school,” said Steve Heath, a member of that team.
Dan White of Mattapoisett was a linebacker on the team.
“When I played in high school, I was on top of the world. I thought I was indestructible. I never forgot that,” White said.
Craig Sherman played on the ’65 team and later served as head football coach at ORR for 17 years.
“As coach, we had a couple of really good teams and kids who played in college,” Sherman said. “It’s great when the kids represent ORR at a higher level.”
Bill Tilden, the school’s Athletic Director, played football and ran track while he was a student at ORR.
“I remember my senior year especially because I was the only distance kid that year on the track team. I did the one-mile and the two-mile for the team,” Tilden said.
Today, Tilden is head coach for the boys track team, which typically breaks records and places in regional and national competitions. The boys were South Coast Conference champions in 2011 and in 2012.
On June 8, the Hall of Fame will host a ceremony to induct a few new members, including the 1991-92 hockey team.
“It was the first ORR hockey team to be recognized statewide,” Heath said.
Of the induction ceremony, Sherman said, “It’s a worthy cause to single out people who did outstanding things like the ’65 football team. When you participate in something like that, it stands the test of time. It’s nice to see these guys again.”
