The bigger the better: Sippican Land Trust expands Osprey Marsh

Apr 2, 2025

MARION — Sippican Land Trust has acquired a parcel of land located at 366 Point Road, expanding its oversight in the Osprey Marsh area.

While the acquired land was historically used for residential purposes, the house that currently sits on the property is “beyond salvageable,” according to the land trust.

Residential use of the land dates as far back as the 1800s when 366 Point Road was called the Macomber House, referring to its owner at the time, farmer Caleb Macomber, according to Mary Howland Smoyer who is a descendent of historical land owners in the marsh area.

The land stayed within the family for generations, passed down to the descendants of Macomber starting with his daughter Alice.

The organization is hoping to “give the property a new lease on life” and is committed to “a long-term management plan of the site,” including eradication of invasive species like Japanese Knotweed and planting native species.
