Books find a new home at library sale

MATTAPOISETT — Tucked away in the basement of the Mattapoisett Library, readers browsed for books to buy during a sale hosted by the Friends of the Mattapoisett Public Library on Saturday, July 15.

“Every other month we have a regular monthly book sale and then we have our big annual sale,” said Kathleen Flaherty Sites, president of the Friends of the Mattapoisett Library.

“The thing that’s really nice about it is I think we have a lot of minimalists in Mattapoisett because we get a lot of best sellers,” she said.

The books in the sale are donated by members of the community.

According to Flaherty Sites, funds raised are put toward paying for family passes to museums like the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Boston Museum of Science and more.

The friends also buy needed equipment for the library.

While some patrons picked up books for themselves, engaged couple Michaela Deady and Ben Kaliff, picked up a whole bag of books to use as centerpieces and party favors at their upcoming wedding.

According to Deady, she is a math teacher and Kaliff is a history teacher so she looked for older, history related books as well as interesting hard-cover books.

“I’m thinking that we’re going to put them out as centerpieces,” said Deady. “And then at the end of the night I’ll say ‘if you see a book that pulls your attention, grab it and go.’”
