Brandt Island Cove in Mattapoisett closed to shellfishing
MATTAPOISETT — A May 8 rainstorm has resulted in the closure of certain shellfishing areas in Mattapoisett.
The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries announced May 9 that portions of Buzzards Bay in Mattapoisett, New Bedford, Dartmouth and Fairhaven no longer met the criteria to be open to shellfishing due to combined sewer overflow.
The closed shellfish growing areas are BB10 to BB23, according to the notice. BB23 is Brandt Island Cove. The closure will remain in effect until further notice, the letter said.
The digging, harvesting or collecting of shellfish or attempts to do so, except for bay scallops harvested for the adductor muscle, and the possession of shellfish from those portions of Buzzards Bay is prohibited until further notice.
