A fast, defensively-minded team of Wareham Vikings defeated the Old Rochester Bulldogs 63-60 during their second game of the season on Friday night at Wareham High School.

“We just didn’t play a clean enough game,” said Bulldogs Head Coach Steve Carvalho. “And we really struggled with our rebounds.”

The Bulldogs trailed their opponents by roughly 10 points for most of the game, and the situation took a turn for the worst when junior Jonah DePina injured his knee before the end of the first half.

Unable to move, DePina was taken off the court by Wareham EMS.

“He just jumped the wrong way,” said Carvalho. “We’re still not entirely sure how it happened.”

With the extent of DePina’s injury unknown, Carvalho said it’s unclear if he’ll be able to return to the court this season.

With the Bulldogs down a player, the Vikings were leading the team 41-31 by the end of the first half.

Old Rochester redoubled its efforts in the third quarter of the game, however, closing the gap into the last seconds of the match.

“We were playing with a lean bench,” said Carvalho. “So I give my kids a lot of credit for having a chance to tie the score.”

Carvalho said he would be looking forward to the Bulldog’s next home game against the Vikings.

Both the Bulldogs and the Vikings now have an overall score of 1-1 for the season.

Old Rochester’s next match will be against Fairhaven on Friday, Dec. 21.
