Bulldogs earn an exciting 46-45 win during homecoming

The Bulldogs narrowly beat Seekonk 46-45 in a thrilling football game on Friday night that capped a week of homecoming celebrations.

Several deep offensive runs, a couple that were 70-plus yards, kept the Bulldogs competitive against a high flying Seekonk offense.

The win is the team’s second of the year. It follows a drubbing of Wareham on Oct. 16 when the Vikings lost 41-13.

Early in Friday's game, ORR was down 27-13.

Late in the second quarter, sophomore Harry Smith scored a touchdown after a 68-yard punt return. Following the 1-point conversion the Bulldogs trailed 27-20.

Quarterback Cam Hamilton then completed a 17-yard pass to Smith, which put the team within striking distance of the end zone.

At halftime the team’s were tied 27-27.

For the next two quarters, the score remained tied for the majority of the game as the Bulldogs and Warriors found the end zone easily enough, but failed to convert extra points. For Seekonk, the 2-point conversion proved elusive while the Bulldogs missed two 1-point field goals following touchdowns.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that ORR took the lead with three minutes remaining.

After a Seekonk touchdown that put the team up 33-39, Smith answered with another long run – 41 yards – that brought him to the end zone.

ORR’s field kick missed the uprights, and both teams remained tied at 39-39.

The team’s scoring approaches differed as Seekonk relied heavily on passing, but it proved no match for ORR’s running game. A short pass from Hamilton to junior tight end Grant Reuter resulted in a 70-yard touchdown run in the fourth.

Now tied 45-45, all ORR had to do was complete the 1-point conversion for the lead, and the Bulldogs did just that.

With a couple minutes left on the clock, the Bulldogs defense held strong as Seekonk threatened to score. The Warrior’s chances were knocked down as senior linebacker Corey Dias swatted away a pass intended for the end zone.

The Bulldogs next game is on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, at home against Apponequet. The game starts at 10 a.m.
