Bulldogs football preps for championship game

After the Old Rochester Regional Bulldogs bested Dighton Rehoboth last weekend to punch their ticket to the South Coast Conference Championship, Coach Bryce Guilbeault said it shows just how much the team has grown this season.

He said the team is “just clicking at the right time.”

The Bulldogs play away against Apponequet on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the title, a team Guilbeault said beat the Bulldogs earlier this season.

But ORR was bested by Dighton-Rehoboth to kick off the season, and they were able to take them down when it counted.

“I think guys now are getting comfortable in their roles,” Guilbeault said. “It’s just been translating to more success on the field.”

Guilbeault said the seniors on the team this year could be the first class to see a three-peat of SCC title wins.

“Their goal at the start of the year was to win an SCC championship,” he said. “Now they have an opportunity on Saturday night.”

But to get there, Guilbeault said the Bulldogs will have to get through a well-oiled team.

“They’re just balanced,” he said of Apponequet. “They’ve had a lot of success throwing the ball.”

Guilbeault said the Bulldogs have adjusted well to play with covid restrictions like shortened practice times.

“Our kids have done a good job of adapting, day to day sometimes,” he said.

And Guilbeault said he thinks the team is positioned well for the championship game.

“I think we’ve got a good game plan,” he said. “The kids have all bought in, and hopefully that translates on Saturday night.”

Until then, the team is preparing for the big game.

“We’ll have to wait and see what happens,” Guilbeault said.
