MATTAPOISETT — After a nail-biting first half, the Old Rochester Regional High School boys basketball team beat Martha’s Vineyard 59-50, advancing to the final eight teams in their division for the MIAA State Tournament.

“It was a really good team win,” said Old Rochester player Sawyer Fox. “We came out shooting well.”

“Everything came together,” said Fox. “It was a game of runs, we made a few, they made a few but in the end I’m glad we worked hard enough, got rebounds and came together for the win.”

By the middle of the second period Old Rochester had a six point lead but by half-time both teams were tied 29-29.

A solid second half brought the final score to 59-50.

The energy on the court and in the stands was intense, Bulldogs fans drowned out chants coming from the opposing side and the stands were packed. So many people attended Wednesday’s game that there was standing room only by the 5 p.m. start time.

Now, following this win, the Bulldogs move on to the “elite eight,” said Fox.

Old Rochester will go on to compete against either Boston’s English High School or Lowell Catholic High School in a to-be-announced game.

“We’ve been working really hard, focusing on rebounding,” said Fox. “Just hard work, we’ve got to keep going but we have high hopes for the rest of the season.
