Candidate profile: Eric Beauregard for Mattapoisett School Committee

May 12, 2021

MATTAPOISETT —A full time member of the National Guard, Eric Beauregard knows what it’s like to be away from his family.

Come May 18, the recent Mattapoisett resident hopes to offer that very insight into the issues facing military families to the School Committee.

“I can relate to any other veteran family member also dealing with separation,” he said. “It’s a dynamic that’s unrelatable if you don’t have experience in it.”

Beauregard has two children, one in Center school, and another attending a private preschool. July will mark one year as a Mattapoisett resident for Beauregard.

He said the School Committee is part of what he believes holds the schools together, calling the relationship a “three-legged stool.”

The legs of the stool, Beauregard said, are the school administration, the committee itself and the Mattapoisett community — all of which are needed to support the effective operation of the school system.

He said the school committee is “one of the most important roles in a contested election in this town,” because education represents “biggest impact, positively or negatively” on the community.

“It’s the most vital, delicate piece of investment we have,” Beauregard said.

He added that his time in the National Guard makes him fit for public service.

“I know what it takes to be a good leader and a good follower,” Beauregard noted.

The Mattapoisett resident said he feels the biggest issue facing the School Committee is any possible variant of covid which could affect the operation of the schools, adding that officials should “make a more robust reaction” plan in anticipation of a variant.

However, Beauregard said the schools have been doing an “outstanding job” of facilities and personnel management this year.

Another priority, Beauregard said, is that the committee take steps to ensure students can continue to go to school in person.

“There’s risk in everything we do,” he said. “We’re elected to mitigate the risk — not be risk averse.”
