Cans for a cause

The Old Rochester transition class is hoping to build a community garden, so it held a bottle and can drive to raise money.

The transition class helps teach special needs students ages 18-22 vocational and social skills.

“After high school they get a certificate of completion and then they have four more years to be prepared for the adult world,” teacher Rebecca Okolita said.

All the funds from the bottle and can drive go back to the program to help pay for a new community garden, as well as field trips and enrolling the students in college.

Student helper Aidan Ridings came up with the idea for the drive after getting involved with the transition class students.

“I want to help them out,” he said. “They do a lot of activities to get experiences.”

In addition to the drive on Saturday, the school also keeps permanent boxes out for students to donate to, for instance when they finish off a can of soda in the school cafeteria.

Though the drive is over, Okolita said the group always welcomes can donations to help raise money.
