Cardi's donates full set of furniture to Habitat house

The ribbon cutting ceremony for Marion's first Habitat for Humanity build is Saturday, but a major donation already has the house looking more like a home.

A truck from Cardi's Furniture backed into the driveway of 185 Wareham Road on Thursday morning filled with furniture for the house.

As two movers unloaded beds, living room and dining room furniture for the home, spokesman Benjamin DeCastro said, "This is really what it's all about, to be part of something bigger than yourself."

Cardi's is teaming up with the Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity for the Marion house as well as a soon to be renovated home in Wareham. Originally, the company planned to outfit just the living room of the Marion home, but after visiting the space, the decision was made to do the whole house.

"It was above and beyond anything they ever expected," Executive Director Christine Lacourse said of the family of four.

The exact furniture will be a surprise, but DeCastro visited the house several times before choosing the pieces, which he tried to coordinate with the family's chosen color palate.

"We think it's the icing on the cake," DeCastro said. "We want to make it a home, and we want to make it comfortable for them."

He said Cardi's likes working with Habitat because of the community involvement.

"We want to work with groups that are in the trenches," he said.

The donation is also a way for Cardi's to give to a community where it will soon have more of a presence. The company is preparing to open a new store in East Wareham that was occupied by Wal-Mart. The opening will be in May or June, said DeCastro.

The Wareham house renovation will begin after the completion of the Marion home. The deadline for families to apply is April 1. For more information, call 508.758.4517.
