There are a number of events and programs celebrating Black History Month being held throughout the Tri-Town from story walks to art exhibits. 

Throughout February, Tri-Town Against Racism is partnering with the Sippican Lands Trust to offer a story walk at Pierson Woods on Point Road, featuring “The Sun Is So Quiet” by Nikki Giovanni, with Illustrations by Ashley Bryan. This story handles themes of childhood memories. 

Also, from Feb. 15 to March 2, Tri-Town Against Racism, the Joseph Plumb Memorial Library and Rochester Land Trust are collaborating for a Black History Month “Trail Tale” at the Lionberger Trail on Haskell Ridge Road. The featured book is The Year “We Learned to Fly” by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by Rafael Lopez. There is an activity at the end of the trail and a Black History Month bookmark for each reader. 

At the Elizabeth Taber Library, visit all month long to find novels, histories, cook books, essays, graphic novels, picture books, crafts and more celebrating Black history and culture. In honor of Black History Month, the Excellent family, who are Tri-Town Against Racism volunteers, will celebrate at the Elizabeth Taber Library on Friday, Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m. with stories, songs and art celebrating Black history and stories.

The Mattapoisett Museum and Tri-Town Against Racism are partnering to offer the “Creative Expressions Contest,” a juried art show for any student who is a Tri-Town resident. They do not need to attend school in the Tri-Town. Submissions must follow the theme “Black Resistance.” Artwork, poems, essays, songs or any type of creative work is eligible. The show’s submission deadline is Monday, Feb. 20. Artwork will be on display at the Mattapoisett Museum from Feb. 26 to March 26.
