Center School Clock gets long-term fund
The Center School clock is installed, enclosed, and now has a long-term fund.
“There is harmony and synchronization in the village of Mattapoisett once again,” said Ray Andrews, who lead the restoration project.
Andrews discussed the establishment of a donation gift account for the care and maintenance of the clock with Selectmen on Tuesday.
Andrews said there is approximately $4,000 left in the donation fund, though he had hoped for more.
“I had budgeted $5,000 for the relocation of the clock. It ended up being $11,000,” he said. “That really put a heavy dent on the donation fund.”
The good news, said Andrews, is that there should not be many costs besides $1,500 for Balzer Family Clock Works, the company that renovated the clock, to tear down and rebuild the clock next summer.
“They recommend that one year after a major renovation,” said Andrews.
With proper maintenance, the clock may not require further repairs for at least 10 years, he said.
Andrews has been checking on the clock several times a week and making minor adjustments as needed.
“It was 11 seconds off after six days, so it’s pretty accurate,” he said.
Andrews also mentioned that he wanted to speak with the School Committee about creating a Center School Museum in the room where the clock mechanisms are held.
In addition to approving the donation gift account for the clock, Selectmen voted to appoint Andrews as Clock Keeper.
