Center School Health Fair gets kids moving

Feb 5, 2016

Kids dodged, ducked and darted their way through the activities offered at Center School’s first ever Health Fair held Thursday night.

The event featured obstacle courses, dodgeball and races for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. At informational booths set up in the gymnasium, parents learned about healthful opportunities available in the tri-town and South Coast.

“If we get ten more people thinking about their health then we’re doing a good job,” said physical education teacher Chad Cabeceiras.

Known as Mr. C to Center and Old Hammondtown School students, Cabeceiras organized the Health Fair to stress the importance of physical activity.

He hopes the event will become an annual affair.

“This is all about trying to create lifelong, physically active individuals,” he said.

With physical education class offered once a week at both schools, Cabeceiras wants students provided with more opportunities to move.

Helping to achieve that goal is the new BOKS (Building Our Kids Success) fitness program. Free courtesy of Reebok, the program gives kids a chance to work up a sweat twice a week before classes start.

“A sedentary lifestyle isn’t good for anybody’s health,” Cabeceiras said. “BOKS gets the kids moving and activates their brains.”

During the fair, local groups and businesses provided plenty of fun things to do.

Mattapoisett YMCA Executive Director Joe Marciszyn arrived with all the materials needed for “ga-ga.”

The game, played inside a hexagon shaped court, is similar to dodgeball.

Marciszyn said he was excited the YMCA could participate in the fair.

“Promoting healthy living is part of our mission, and when I was invited to the fair I said, ‘Of course we’ll be there. What can we bring?’”

Other Health Fair participants and supporters included Mattapoisett Recreation, Seaside Crossfit, Kaleidoscope Dance & Gymnastics, the Mattapoisett Track Club, Bay State Gymnastics Academy, and the Middleborough Area Medical Reserve Corps.
