Changing tides: new art exhibit to open at the Marion Art Center

May 23, 2025

MARION — On May 24, artist Peter C. Stone’s exhibition “TIDELANDS and Other Stories” will open at the Marion Art Center.

Stone’s oil paintings are inspired by the coastal lowlands from northern Florida, lowcountry Carolinas and the beaches and estuaries of southern New England and explore coastal climate impacts and sea level rise. They are also built on questions about what these ecosystems will face against environmental challenges.

The exhibition will offer viewers a look at the process of building illustrated stories written by the artist, including works in pen & ink and watercolor, which are also the graphic design of several books.

Stone has presented his work in more than 60 solo shows and over 100 group exhibitions at galleries and museums across the United States, Canada and England since 1983, exploring the evolutionary wisdom and interconnectedness of endangered creatures, cultures and ecosystems.

The exhibition will begin with a reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Marion Art Center at 80 Pleasant Street on Saturday, May 24. There will also be a gallery talk with Stone on Saturday, June 7 at 11 a.m., with both events free and open to the public.
