Classic Film Fridays returns April 13

Mar 21, 2012

Friday, April 13 will mark the third installment of the Sippican Historical Society’s new program: “Classic Film Fridays.”  One Friday each month, the Society presents a classic film and offers a discussion on its historical context or significance.

April will feature the acclaimed “Sunrise at Campobello,” starring Ralph Bellamy and Greer Garson.  Based on the award winning Broadway play of the same name, the film tells story of FDR’s bout with polio in 1921 at age 40 and his – and wife Eleanor’s - determination to triumph over the many challenges the ailment posed.

Those familiar with local history know that FDR frequented Marion for treatment by infantile paralysis specialist, Dr. William McDonald. According to the physician’s 1936 obituary, “Daily swims off Dr. McDonald’s private pier, and exercise on his lawn and private beach, were part of the Roosevelt routine.”

“Classic Film Fridays” are held at the Marion Music Hall on Front Street and are offered free of charge to the public.   Films begin at 7:00 p.m., and refreshments are available.  For more information, contact the SHS at (508)748-1116.
