Classical musicians perform for free March 1

Feb 24, 2014

As classical musicians Ariadne Daskalakis and Anthony Spiri have traveled the world, but you don't have to book a flight to hear them play. The duo will perform Saturday, March 1 at Tabor Academy.

Playing an orchestral sampling of sonatas composed by George Handel, Wolfang Mozart and Gabriel Fauré, both will perform at 4 p.m. in the school’s Lyndon South Auditorium, located at 66 Spring St., Marion. The concert is free and open to the public.

Daskalakis is a longtime summer resident of Wareham. She started a classical music festival there a few years ago to raise awareness for the genre. The Tomlinson Fund for the Arts at Tabor Academy is sponsoring Saturday's concert. The fund is used to invite professional artists to campus for student workshops.

Born in Boston, Daskalakis studied violin at the New England Conservatory Prep School and the Julliard School. She traveled to Germany to further her studies. In 2000, she became the youngest professor of violin at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne.

It was in Cologne where Daskalakis met Spiri, a pianist. Both were working as professors at the Cologne Conservatory for Music and Dance, the largest conservatory in Europe.

Spiri studied music in Cleaveland and then Brandeis Univeristy before he travelled to Paris and other European cities.

Now he has travelled throughout the world playing at festivals in Europe, Japan and the United States. As a soloist he has played in the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Daskalakis has also performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe recently, in addition to the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra.
