Collage of classes make art together
Young artists helped even younger artists at Rochester Memorial School on Friday morning as art teacher Joanne Smith introduced the Project Grow preschool students to her third grade class.
The third grade students helped the preschool kids create collages that will eventually be scanned for the annual Square 1 Art Fundraiser that allows parents to purchase their child’s artwork printed on tiles, mugs, quilting squares and other items.
Proceeds from the sales go to the school’s art program, in particular the annual sixth grade field trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, an art show and a musical.
Smith said the fundraiser has been a success since it began 13 years ago. Friday’s collage collaboration also went well.
“It really builds up a community in the school- to have students come together to work on group projects,” said Smith.
Project Grow teacher Tara Nelson said her students were excited to come to the art room for the first time.
“They love it. They want to do what the big kids do,” she said.
The third grade students took their roles as helpers seriously.
Third grader Jack Murray and his younger brother Owen wore the same shirt for the day and had fun planning out their collage. Felicity Kulak also got to work with her young cousin.
A table full of boys got along well as they created a race car shape on their artwork.
“You know, you’re a great artists, Neal!” Michael Niemi told his protégé Neal Eddleston.
