Committee formed to revamp reading at Sippican School
To improve reading habits in Marion, a 15-person committee of staff members is exploring how to improve Sippican School’s reading curriculum.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Elise Frangos and Principal Lyn Rivet explained the process to Marion School Committee members at their Oct. 1 meeting.
“We’re going to explore what’s being done in Sippican School at every grade level, examine best practices, and create a pacing guide for reading, and reading practices as students progress through Sippican,” Frangos explained.
Rivet said committee members are enthusiastic about researching how to best teach literacy. Visits to neighboring schools to review reading curriculum are planned.
“We want to keep an open mind and see what’s out there,” Rivet said. “We want to find out what’s in the best interest of Sippican School students.”
Frangos said the group’s mission is to instill a love of literacy in students and to make them proficient readers.
Currently, the committee is looking into the benefits of guided reading lesson plans versus reading workshops and other practices.
“It’s an exploratory process and we’ve just begun,” Frangos said.
