Construction begins soon on new produce market in Marion

Almost three years since the Marion Planning Board first approved their proposal and four years since they purchased the property, Arnie and Debbie Johnson are ready to break ground on Fieldstone Farms, a produce shop located on the site of the old Frigate Steakhouse.

“We’re slowly getting there,” said Arnie Johnson, a Rochester resident. “We spent a good year and a half or two finding the right people to do the work on it.”

Johnson said they plan to get the building permits soon and will start construction of the new structure, located at 806 Mill St., in the next few weeks with an opening date in October.

The year round market will focus on fresh fruits and vegetables and “all the items that go along with that,” said Johnson. There will be a small bakery with breads and pies as well.

“We’d like to start with local produce and then go regional, and from there New England produce. We want to feature Massachusetts products like maple syrup, honey, cheeses and milk,” said Johnson, who will be the manager while his wife is the owner.

Marion-based architect Anthi Frangiadis designed the building, which Johnson said will fit in with its surroundings and the rest of the town.

“We’re going to have a farmer’s porch on the outside,” Johnson said. “My intent is during warmer times of the year to have fruits and vegetables right out there, sort of like a North End produce market.”

After several opening dates have come and gone, Johnson said they’re anxious to see the project come to fruition.

“It’s taken us a long time to get to this place. It’s probably better that we took our time than trying to rush into everything,” he said. “We’re a little nervous but it’s exciting.”
