Cyclists get ready to ride for Buzzards Bay Coalition fundraiser
From the winner of the South Coast bike challenge to a Marion woman who just started training last month, there’s a wide variety of cyclists gearing up for the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s ninth annual Watershed Ride.
Set for Sunday, Oct. 4, the ride is a 75-mile cycling fundraiser whose route winds through a variety of watershed habitats. Riders can also choose to participate in a 35-mile ride that starts in Rochester.
Crystal Green of Marion said she and a friend started preparing for the shorter ride last month after seeing a pamphlet for the ride.
“I saw it and knew right away I had to participate,” she said.
In a short time, she’s been preparing by putting in 30-mile rides in and around Marion.
Having grown up in Marion, she said she has close ties to the water and supports the coalition’s mission.
“I’ve seen how their efforts have cleaned up the bay through the years,” she said. “Also, they put together great programs that get people and families out on the water and exploring the watershed.”
The Oct. 4 ride will include Marc Anderson. This marks his second time participating in the event and raising funds for the coalition.
“Last year was my first year and it was just phenomenal: the organization, the route, the weather, the party at the end,” said the Mattapoisett resident. “I said why not do it again?”
This summer, Anderson biked 4,335 miles from May 1 to Labor Day as he went on to win the South Coast Bike Challenge.
With farms, fields and forests along the route, he said there’s a variety of landscapes for cyclists to check out.
The ride passes through almost every town in the watershed. Riders on the 75-mile route start at 9 a.m. and the 35-mile route cyclists start at noon. The ride ends at 5 p.m.
The full ride route begins in Westport and leads cyclists through farmland, coastal villages, New Bedford’s Fort Taber and working waterfront, around cranberry bogs and along the scenic back roads of Cape Cod. The half ride begins in Rochester and covers the second half of the course.
Both rides culminate at a finish line party on the lawn of the Quissett Harbor House in Woods Hole with live music.
More than 100 cyclists of all ages and ability, from all parts of the watershed and beyond, are registered for the Watershed Ride.
