'December Nights, December Lights' highlights holiday traditions

Center School kids honored three winter holidays in speech, song and costume on Thursday morning with their play "December Nights, December Lights," performed for friends and family.

The theme of the play could be wrapped up in a line from the title song: "Learn the customs of your fellow man."

Kids sang about the eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, the Mexican "La Fiesta de la Posada" that reenacts Mary and Joseph looking for an inn to spend the night, and the Pan-African holiday Kwanzaa.

The play concluded with the song "Holiday Lights" and Principal Rose Bowman challenged the audience to be a beacon for others.

"Who will we be a light for in this holiday season?" she said.

Bowman commended the staff and especially Musical Director Willow Dowling for the play's success.

"There is joy in Mattapoisett today," said Bowman.
