MATTAPOISETT — As the clock ticked down, the screams from spectators of “Five, four, three, two, one” saturated the gymnasium at Old Rochester Regional Junior High School.

After a breakfast, slideshow and yearbook signings, eighth graders competed in the Big Kahuna Volleyball Tournament on the last day of school Tuesday, June 11.

During the tournament, teams made up of different homerooms engaged in bouts of volleyball with an oversize ball.

The theme of the affair, as the annual tradition’s name discloses, is Hawaiian.

As classmates watched on gym bleachers, homeroom teams matched up on two different courts. Junior high faculty wearing Hawaiian shirts and leis also spectated and kept score of the timed matches.

The winning team received a championship plaque bearing a tiki.
