Enterprising teens plan to set up snack stand at Mattapoisett beach

Old Rochester Regional High School students Sean Hardwick, Lars Eklund and Tyler Shjarfeiden want you to beach your coolers.

This summer the trio of 15-year-olds hope to make a little pocket money for themselves and charity with a snack stand at Mattapoisett Town Beach.

“It’s difficult for them to get jobs because they’re not 16,” said Sean’s mother Amy Hardwick. Hardwick said she and the boys’ parents didn’t need to prompt the kids to do something this summer. “It was their idea.”

“We were thinking of ways to make money this summer, and we hang out at that beach,” said Sean.

Sean said he and Lars hatched the plan and then invited Tyler to join them.

With no one else setting up a snack stand in several years, the Board of Selectmen encouraged the kids’ initiative.

At a meeting in April, the Selectmen gave the ORR students conditional approval with the understanding that they speak with the Board of Health. Each of the teens also has to have their parents sign a waver of liability since they are underage.

The young entrepreneurs plan to set up their stand named the Snack Attack from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday, starting a week after school gets out.

“They’ll have a portable table and large coolers for drinks,” said Hardwick. “It’s a pretty simple plan.”

At the suggestion of Melody Pacheco, Assistant to the Town Administrator, the kids agreed to donate a portion of their earnings to charity.

“That would be a good thing for you guys to start doing and be a part of the community,” said Pacheco at the Selectmen meeting. “It’s a community service thing even though they get a little money for it.”

The boys decided to commit a tenth of their earnings to Better Community Living, a nonprofit that works with adults and children with disabilities in the Greater New Bedford area.
