Eversource gives timeline for Mattapoisett gas line project

MATTAPOISETT — Representatives from Eversource spoke in front of the Mattapoisett Select Board during a Sept. 14 meeting to present initial plans for upgrading gas lines that run along Main St.

The work of replacing the lines will have to be done in the off-season to avoid blocking off a key path to Long Wharf and will also need to be completed before major road work is scheduled to begin in summer 2025.

Despite some confusion about the timeline of the 2025 project, Eversource Representative Thomas Costa said his company was committed to finishing its work as quickly as necessary for the town.

“Our goal is to be done before you do your project,” said Costa, adding, “If we need to break this project into three years, I can do that.”

Costa said that his team could begin Phase I of the project — which would cover the section of Main St. between Route 6 and Long Wharf — as early as mid-November as long as weather conditions and town officials would permit it.

Select Board members raised concerns about having the street open again by next spring so that boats could access the wharf.

“I mean you’ve got to think from North Street to Church Street, that’s going to have to be open by May first — [all the way] to the ramps so that people can start launching,” said Select Board Member Tyler Macallister.

Though no decisions were made at the meeting, plans were advanced and project parameters are expected to be submitted in the coming months.
