Experienced camp counselor to head Mattapoisett summer program

Parents trying to stave off the whines of “I’m bored” this summer might find a remedy with Kate Oleson and her crew at the Seahorse Explorers Summer Program.

The program, sponsored by Mattapoisett Recreation, is under the supervision of Oleson who has worked at the Mattapoisett YMCA’s camp for the past seven years.

“I love crafts. I love games. I like to plan. I’m organized, so it should be a good summer,” said Oleson.

The program begins June 30, runs for six weeks, Monday to Friday, and is for kids who will be in first through sixth grades in the coming school year.

Unlike many summer camps and programs, Seahorse Explorers is “extremely flexible,” said Oleson.

Kids can attend a whole week session or choose which full days or half days (a.m. or p.m.) they want to participate.

Oleson, who just graduated from Framingham State University with a double major in elementary education and sociology, said starting at the ground level of the program has its benefits.

“I love that it’s a new program,” she said. “I had a lot of parents come up to me and say my child went there, but I didn’t like this.”

Hearing comments from parents has strengthened the offerings with the Seahorse Explorers Program, said Oleson. Her experience is also a boost.

At the YMCA she was a lifeguard, arts and crafts specialist and a boating specialist.

With her training and a strong partnership with the town, kids will have a full schedule of events each day. There will be arts and crafts, a trip to the beach, games, sports and group activities daily.

Visits to the library will also be a regular part of the program as kids participate in the summer reading program and other activities there.

Oleson says the program, which can accommodate 48 kids a day, has a great staff that includes students from Old Rochester Regional High School.

“My biggest thing was to find really good role models and leaders,” said Oleson.

The program has ongoing enrollment, but Oleson hopes parents will sign their kids up early.

“Everything is definitely new, but it’s given us a lot of room to be flexible and make a memorable summer for kids,” she said.
