Faculty and students compete in basketball showdown

Old Rochester Regional High School students and staff left class for the court Friday to face off in a basketball game.

About 20 participants lined the benches of each team. Experienced players played alongside first timers.

Fellow students, teachers and parents watched and rooted during the game, which doubled as a fundraiser for the junior and senior classes.

With questionable calls, scoreboard malfunctions in the teacher’s favor and student showboating, it was a thoroughly entertaining game.

At the end of overtime, the students came out on top, 52-51.

For students, it was an opportunity to see teachers show off their fun sides.

English teacher Sarabeth Morrell played varsity basketball starting freshman year of high school.

“One of my favorite parts of being a teacher is all of the ‘extra’ things you can do in your school and community,” Morrell said. “It is so much fun to participate in events that extend beyond the classroom.”

The athletic director’s office assistant Aimee Fox agreed, saying, “Looking back, I’ve found that the more involved I was, the more fun I had. And growing up, the adults that didn’t take themselves too seriously were easier to identify with and learn from.”

At the same time, students took advantage of their brief equality with teachers. Senior Hannah Vieira tackled Athletic Director Bill Tilden.

Numerous students contested and guarded Principal Mike Devoll.

Senior Leah Thomas, usually a spectator at basketball games, jumped into the contest this year. “It’s my senior year and I’ve always gone to the games, but this time I thought it would be a great experience to actually play,” said Thomas.
